I am currently in the library at school. Today is the first day of my switch from full-time employment to part-time employment while attending school. Apparently someone forgot to tell my body that relief was on the way. I was feeling pretty congested most of the day yesterday, and this morning I woke up with that "Yep, I'm fixin' to be sick" feeling in the back of my throat and sinus passages.
So, it's lots of Emergen-C for me - and a good supply of rest these next three afternoons.
OK. Back to the work thing. I have come to realize a few very important things since I started school in January:
- I am not 18 anymore.
- I am not 25 anymore.
- 40-ish minutes a day with my wife with one day off together is not enough.
- Time and health are more important than money.
- I have the most amazing and supportive wife in the world.
So let's start with #1: I am not 18 anymore. Back in the day - when I was 18 - I tried the whole full-time work and full-time school thing with relatively little physical consequences. I dropped out of school after about a year due to personal crisis and lack of motivation.
On to #2: I am not 25 anymore. I went back to school after my initial active duty training for the Air Force because I was getting the G.I. Bill and I thought I was finally getting things in order in my life. Again, I worked full-time and went to school full-time, but dropped out after about two years due to personal crisis and a lack of motivation. Are we seeing a pattern here?
#3: I have been married for just over two years, and every day I find more things to love about my wife. I really miss her when I only get to spend a little bit of time with her. My schedule for most of the week as of late has been this: Get up at 6:00am (an hour before her). Go to school from 7:30am to 11:45am. Go to work from 12:30pm to 9:00pm. Come home by 9:30pm. Go to bed with my wife at approximately 10:15pm. Time spent with wife each day: 45 minutes. This is not nearly enough, especially when I work every Saturday and she works Monday through Friday.
#4: Two days ago, as I was finishing my last day of full-time employment, everyone I came in contact with told me how tired I looked. I thought about it and realized that I haven't been that exhausted since basic training. If you have been through basic training, you know what I am talking about. About two weeks before that, my wife and I decided to take out some extra student loans because our time together (see #3) and my health is more important than money.
#5: See the last part of #4. My wife is absolutely amazing. I am so thankful that I have her to support me both emotionally and financially as I try to finally finish school. She is the most wonderful person I have ever met, and I can't help but assume that I will never meet anyone as wonderful as her again.
So that's it. I am working part-time now. I will most likely have more time to do more of the things that I really want to be doing, and rest as well. But for now, I have to go to class. Talk to you soon.
