Part of the final in my Intro to Poetry class was to write a poem inspired by a poem from our curriculum. I chose to write a poem inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's The Rhodora: On Being Asked, Whence Is the Flower? Here is a link to the text of that poem: Emerson Central
Here is my poem inspired by it:
Daylight Savings Time
Once I've warded off my body's protest,
I stumble out, despite the lack of rest.
I notice that the light is not so bright.
They say I've lost an hour of sleep last night.
Even the dogs seem sluggish at this hour,
For they must think it queer to be awake.
They pick at their food and do not devour
The way they would at any old daybreak.
Outside the chill sharpens all my senses,
And red clouds streak the sky o'er the fences.
What fool would count the hours of sleep he missed,
When by such light his forehead is so kissed?
I would not have heard the red robin sing
Nor breathed the crisp air, moist with morning dew.
Squandered would be my chance to hail the spring
Had not conventions thrown the time askew.
I am the Reverend Humpy and I have approved this message.
