Yesterday my wife and I were involved in a car collision. We were stopped at an intersection behind a city bus. The light had changed to green, but the bus was in the middle of letting somebody off, so we were still stopped. We were in the middle of a conversation when the other driver hit us from behind. I had enough time before the bus moved on to look back and see the other driver - a young female with obviously dyed blonde hair.
Once the bus left, I turned right to get off of the busy street and looked in my rearview mirror just in time to see the other driver roll right through the intersection and away from the scene. I immediately put the truck in gear and drove through a parking lot to get back out on the street to follow her. By the time I got back onto the main street, however, she was long gone.
My wife and I spent the rest of the afternoon filing police reports and insurance claims, all the while hanging out in the ER so that we could be checked out. The ER doc said that we mainly had minor injuries - although we are more sore today than we were yesterday. Luckily for me, I have excellent auto insurance and don't have to worry about medical expenses at this point.
This is the second hit-and-run collision that I have been involved in during the last 12 months. A while back a kid hit my truck while it was parked in the parking lot of the bar I was playing at. I was onstage at the time, so there were no injuries there, but my truck got dinged up. There was a witness who got the license plate number in that instance, so the guy was caught and his insurance covered everything. This time, all I know is that the bitch had Idaho plates and that her car was a light gold mid-size, import sedan. I hope they catch her, but my hopes aren't really all that high.
I just don't understand the compulsion to flee after something like that. I mean, even if she had no insurance, the punishment that she would have received is going to be far less than what it will be if the cops do get her. It is a felony in Washington to flee the scene of an accident in which injuries have occurred. I don't know. I guess I've just realized that most of the time it's better to face the music than to run like a little bitch.
Anyway, that's what happened this weekend. I guess the moral is if you screw up, own up to it. Karma is a bitch.
I am the Reverend Humpy and I have approved this message.
